Reading-aloud to our kids is a huge part of our family culture. We weave reading into many aspects of our day. We read during morning time, in the afternoons, and at bedtime. Sometimes, though, it’s nice to be the one listening to the story too! Now, I’ve always been a huge fan of audiobooks for myself, but one day it hit me! I can listen to audiobooks with my kids too! We utilize audiobooks during long car rides, during lunch time, and even on rainy afternoons. Here are my favorite audio books for young children.

Favorite Audio Books for Young Children

With the recently COVID-19 outbreak, and many libraries closed, I wanted to share some of our favorite read-alouds for young children, as I know that many of you will be home. Reading with your kids is a great way to connect, so I wouldn’t advise listening to audiobooks exclusively, or instead of reading to your kids, but I definitely recommend using them a little each day to give you a chance to listen too!

Every single one of these titles are in our own audiobook library! We use Audible, but there are a few other audio book resources out there, like Scribd, if you’re interested in those!

AGES 1-3

The first three recommendations are great for children ages one to three. The Frog & Toad stories are read by Arnold Lobel, and he makes them extremely engaging, so they hold young children’s attention. When my youngest was 18 months old loved listening to them with me and her older sister while she ate her lunch! The Llama Llama series is also extremely engaging and adorable. They’re also very short, so they don’t require a huge chunk of attention from a young kiddo.

AGES 3-7

These age recommendations are exactly that – recommendations! My four-year-old has already listened to all of the books in the “ages 6-10” category, so take these lightly! You know your kids best! All of the following books are fun adventures to listen to for the whole family, but might be most enjoyed by children ages 3-7.

03. Three Tales of My Father’s Dragon

04. The Peter Rabbit Collection Beatrix Potter

05. Winnie-the-Pooh Collection

06. Mr. Popper’s Penguins

07. Charlotte’s Web

08. Stuart Little

09. Pippi Longstocking

AGES 6-10 (and beyond)

Like I said, my four-year-old has already listened to two of these. We’ve yet to listen to or read The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe, but we really enjoyed listening to Little House in the Big Woods together! Same for The Wind in the Willows! These are stories that are so fun to hear read-aloud! Enjoy!
