A couple of days ago on Instagram I shared my advent countdown book basket for kids. You guys asked me so many questions about it, so I decided to quickly write up a post for you to read all about how it works! I also included 24 great book options if you need to stock up on your collection for the years to come.

How to Make the Advent Countdown Book Basket for Kids

The “making” is easy. Once you’ve collected your books, of course.

All you have to do is wrap up your 24 books and put them in a basket!

We open up one book each night and read it together as a family!

You can number the books 1-24, but I usually don’t. I prefer to let Gracie pick the book to unwrap each night.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Make sure that if you do celebrate Christmas, that you save “The Night Before Christmas” for Christmas Eve. I usually put a little star on that one in the corner, and let Gracie know that we can’t open that one until Christmas Eve, but all of the others are fair game 🙂

Books for the Advent Countdown Book Basket for Kids

Since I was a Kindergarten teacher prior to making this advent countdown book basket for kids, I already had a readily available collection, but I know for many of you that isn’t the case. The good news is, it doesn’t cost a ton, AND you reuse these holiday books year after year!

Another great way to keep this budget-friendly is to utilize your local library! Just make sure you get a head start because the holiday library book selection starts to get low come early December.

As for the types of books, Jan Brett is one of my favorite author’s because the illustrations in her books are so vivid. I also like to include a few of Gracie’s favorite characters in her basket (aka, Mickey, Fancy Nancy, etc.). Lastly, if you celebrate Christmas as a faith-based holiday (we do), then you can also include books about Jesus, and the nativity story. If not, no big deal! Just use more holiday-based ones!

If you are going to front the money for the initial year of advent countdown books, then here are some I recommend!

01. Jan Brett’s The Night Before Christmas

02. The Missing Mitten Mystery

03. Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer

04. Frosty the Snowman

05. Snowmen at Night

06. Snowmen at Christmas (a favorite)

07. The Mitten

08. Fancy Nancy: Splendiferous Christmas

09. Little Critter ‘Merry Christmas Mom and Dad’

10. God Gave Us Christmas

11. The Littlest Christmas Tree

12. Home for Christmas

13. The Berenstain Bears and The Joy of Giving

14. Mickey Saves Santa

15. The Twelve Days of Christmas

16. Who’s That Knocking on Christmas Eve?

17. Gingerbread Christmas

18. Pinkalicious: Merry Pinkmas!

19. The Polar Express

20. How the Grinch Stole Christmas

21. This First Christmas Night

22. Pete the Cat Saves Christmas

23. Christmas in a Manger

24. How to Catch an Elf
